Eyelash surgery

Eyelash surgery

Eyelashes are a barrier for the eyes. On the one hand, it can block wind and sand, and on the other hand, it can prevent flying insects from entering the eyes. Eyelashes grow outwards. If they tend to grow inwards, they are called inverted eyelashes. Inverted eyelashes can be seen at all ages, and most of the time they are caused by entropion. The damage that inverted eyelashes cause to human eyes is self-evident and needs to be treated as soon as possible. So what are the treatments for inverted eyelashes?

Normal eyelashes grow on the front lip of the eyelid margin. They develop from the surface ectoderm epithelium and are arranged in 2 to 3 rows. They are short, curved and coarse hairs. Eyelashes have the function of shielding light, blocking dust, preventing foreign objects from entering the eyes and beautifying the eyes. Long, black, and upturned eyelashes play an important role in modifying a person's appearance. There are more eyelashes on the upper eyelid, with 100 to 150 roots, and an average length of 8 to 12 mm. The angle of the upper eyelashes when the eyes are open and looking straight ahead is 110° to 130°, and 140° to 160° when the eyes are closed. There are 50 to 80 eyelashes on the lower eyelid, with an average length of about 6 to 8 mm. The angle of the lower eyelashes when the eyes are open and looking straight ahead is 100° to 120°. The roots of eyelashes are deep in the connective tissue and muscles, where there are abnormal sweat glands and sebaceous glands, whose ducts open into the eyelash follicles. There are many small holes arranged in a row on the posterior lip of the eyelid margin. These holes are the openings of the meibomian gland ducts. The meibomian glands themselves are located in the tarsal plate. Abnormal eyelash tilt angle can be caused by changes in the eyelash growth angle or eyelid diseases.

Surgical correction of trichiasis is the "last chance" to prevent trachoma blindness and is the most urgent action to be taken. There are many different surgical procedures to correct trichiasis, but there is one procedure called double tarsal rotation that is simple to perform and has a high success rate.

Surgical correction is a corrective surgery performed based on the customer's specific conditions, namely the length of the palpebral fissure, the shape of the eyelid, the distance between the upper eyelid margin and the eyebrow, etc. According to the degree of skin looseness and inversion, excess skin is removed appropriately, as well as the width of the skin removed, that is, the length of the palpebral fissure, the shape of the eyelid, the distance between the upper eyelid margin and the eyebrow, etc., use a slightly bent small wire to test the appropriate position of the double eyelid and use a ruler to determine the point. Gentian violet is used as a mark, with the central point 6 mm away from the eyelid margin, the point between the inner canthus and the central point about 4 mm away from the eyelid margin, and the outer point between the central and outer canthus, generally not lower than the midpoint or 0.5 to 1 mm below the midpoint. Connect the three points along the arc of the eyelid margin and then observe whether the double eyelid is appropriate. The height of the double eyelid line from the eyelid margin should be adjusted appropriately according to the length of the palpebral fissure. The skin is cut along the incision mark. If the upper eyelid skin is too loose, the incision is extended outward to the orbital margin. When it reaches the lateral canthus, it no longer continues downward along the arc but is aligned with the crow's feet at the lateral canthus.

1. Eyelash removal: This is a simple and inexpensive method, and it is an effective treatment measure if eyelash surgery cannot be performed for some reason.

2. Electrolysis of hair follicles: This is a relatively simple method but requires appropriate equipment. A 2-year follow-up report pointed out that the success rate for mild eyelash enlargement is about 25%.

3. Cryopreservation: Like electrolysis, it requires appropriate equipment and the ability to learn how to apply freezing techniques to cause depigmentation of the eyelid skin. Its success rate is similar to electrolysis.
