Is it better to extract a tooth or fill it?

Toothache is not a disease, but it is really painful when it happens. Many people do not pay attention to protecting their teeth, which leads to various problems with their teeth. Therefore, the oral department of the hospital came into being. As for filling a tooth, it must be done as early as possible, which is helpful for preserving the nerves. So, is it better to extract a tooth or fill a tooth? Let’s take a closer look at this issue.

1. For early-stage tooth decay, that is, tooth decay that has not yet formed cavities, treatment is relatively simple and often uses medication, such as fluoride application, to slow down the progression of caries.

2. For mid-stage tooth decay, that is, teeth with cavities already formed, which are often accompanied by pain, the usual treatment method is filling, i.e., filling the cleaned cavities with artificial materials to stop the development of caries and ultimately restore the shape and function of the teeth. For cases where the tooth decay is extensive and the teeth have become very fragile, a crown is required.

3. For deep caries, that is, teeth that have damaged the pulp, they are often accompanied by severe pain and require root canal treatment. Generally, after root canal treatment, in order to prevent tooth fracture and extend the service life of the tooth, it is best to wear a crown for protection.

4. For decayed teeth that have already been decayed, they can no longer be retained. It is recommended to extract them and then replace them with dentures. Generally, those that can be treated should be treated as much as possible, and extraction is recommended only for those that cannot be treated. Through the above introduction, we can see that the method of treating tooth decay depends on the condition of the tooth decay. Generally, if it can be filled, it should be filled, and if it can be avoided, it should not be extracted.

Regarding the question of whether it is better to extract or fill a tooth, the principle we adhere to is to decide based on the patient's condition. If the patient's toothache can be relieved by taking medicine, try not to have a filling. If the patient's problem can be solved by a filling, try not to have the tooth extracted.
