What are the dangers of jaw surgery?

Chin augmentation is a type of plastic surgery that aims to beautify the jawline. The doctor inserts an artificial mandibular prosthesis into the mandible through a small incision in the mouth, or uses hyaluronic acid injection to pad the chin, or autologous fat injection to pad the chin. Chin augmentation has many advantages and has become a popular plastic surgery nowadays. However, some people who have had chin augmentation may experience harmful problems such as hardening, translucency, and prosthesis exposure and crookedness as they get older.

1. Stiffening of the jaw

Silicone chin pads are relatively safe, but it also depends on the specific situation. Many people experience a hardened chin after using silicone chin pads. This is because the doctor's violent technique during the chin pad surgery causes excessive bleeding, which leads to a hematoma in the chin and causes symptoms of silicone capsular contracture. When you get older, the silicone implant in your chin will become hard after being installed for a long time.

2. Light transmission phenomenon

The silicone material used for chin padding has a certain degree of irritation to our human tissue cells. It is composed of organic silicone molecules. This material will cause some changes in the tissues that are in contact with it over time, manifested as thinning of the skin and subcutaneous tissue or dilation and congestion of subcutaneous capillaries. Therefore, after padding the chin with a silicone prosthesis, the chin area can often be seen shiny and translucent under strong light, giving people the illusion that the skin has become thinner.

3. Infection of expanded tissue

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene is also a material that can be used for chin padding. Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene that contains bacteria will inevitably cause infection if implanted into the chin. Since the air in the operating room cannot be absolutely sterile, the chance of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene being contaminated by airborne bacteria is greater than that of silicone. This makes many people feel the dangers of chin augmentation and infection when they are older.

4. Remove and retract the pad prosthesis

After 7 or 8 years of using silicone prosthesis to pad the chin, regular MRI examinations are required to prevent the silicone from cracking. Once any abnormality occurs, the silicone prosthesis for the chin needs to be removed. The chin of some older people will retract after removal, which is because the silicone prosthesis occupies the space of the chin tissue for a long time.

5. The prosthesis is exposed and crooked

Many older people and those who have had chin prosthesis for a long time will find that the chin prosthesis can easily penetrate the skin or mucous membrane of the chin and appear outside. The outline of the prosthesis is vaguely visible. When you touch the chin with your hand, you can feel the implanted silicone rubber chin prosthesis shaking under the skin. This is because the doctor placed the prosthesis in an inaccurate position when performing the chin augmentation surgery, which caused the chin prosthesis to be exposed and crooked many years later.

6. Allergies

Generally speaking, there will be no allergic reaction when using collagen to pad the chin as long as an allergy test is done. However, some people will still experience pain and itching symptoms. This is related to the individual constitution of the patient. It is the body's rejection reaction to the material implanted in the chin. It is also recommended to contact the attending physician.
