Are there any adverse reactions to hyaluronic acid injections?

Hyaluronic acid injection is a very common cosmetic technique nowadays. Through micro-surgery, it is injected into the deepest layer of the skin, making the skin look younger, retaining moisture, reducing wrinkles, clearing melanin and achieving a whitening effect. However, some people may experience skin itching and allergic reactions such as urticaria after the injection due to certain physical conditions. Severe cases may even cause tumors. This is not allowed for some patients with heart failure or cancer, so special attention should be paid to it in normal times.

The drug should be discontinued promptly and supportive treatment should be adopted. First aid can include epinephrine, corticosteroids and antihistamines.

Pharmacology and Toxicology

Hyaluronic acid is a mucopolysaccharide present in the matrix between human tissues, which can limit the diffusion of extracellular fluid. Hyaluronidase acts on the glucosamine bonds in hyaluronic acid molecules, causing them to hydrolyze and depolymerize, thereby reducing the viscosity of body fluids and allowing intercellular fluids to flow and diffuse more easily. Therefore, it can diffuse locally accumulated drug solutions, exudates or blood, accelerate drug absorption, reduce local tissue tension and pain, and facilitate the absorption and dissipation of edema and inflammatory exudates. This product is one of the basic components of articular cartilage and has the function of nourishing, protecting and maintaining articular cartilage.
