Treatments for sunburn

Summer is the time when you are most likely to get sunburned, especially for people with sensitive skin. If you don’t pay attention to sun protection measures, you can easily get sunburned. Sunburn is very harmful to the skin. If the skin has a good recovery ability, there may be no impact after a period of time. If you have poor skin recovery ability, you may be left with marks of sunburn. Now, let’s take a look at how to treat sunburn!

The action spectrum of this disease is mainly UVB. Ultraviolet radiation causes various cells in the dermis of normal skin to release inflammatory mediators such as histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and kinin, which causes the blood vessels in the dermis to dilate and increase permeability.

Clinical manifestations

In spring and summer, after being exposed to the sun for several hours to more than ten hours, a clearly defined bright red erythema will appear on the exposed area. In severe cases, blisters and erosions may occur. Subsequently, the erythema becomes darker and desquamated, leaving behind pigmentation or reduction in pigmentation. Conscious burning or tingling sensation, often affecting sleep. Mild cases will recover within 2 to 3 days, while severe cases will take about a week to recover. Some patients may also experience conjunctival congestion and eyelid edema. If a wide area is exposed to the sun, it may cause systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, fatigue, nausea and general discomfort, or even palpitations, delirium or shock.

diagnosis

It is generally not difficult to diagnose based on the appearance of erythema, edema or blisters on the local skin after sun exposure, the presence of pigmentation spots after healing, and a sense of burning and pain.

treat

1. Systemic treatment

For mild cases, use antihistamines. For severe cases or those with poor therapeutic effects, take small doses of oral corticosteroids, aspirin or indomethacin.

2. Local treatment

For mild cases, apply calamine lotion topically; for slightly more severe cases, apply cold compresses, corticosteroid cream or 2.5% indomethacin solution.

The above are the treatment methods that can be taken when the skin is sunburned. If you cannot avoid prolonged sun exposure, you must choose a sunscreen with a strong SPF, and it is best to reapply the sunscreen every four hours, otherwise the sun protection effect will be lost due to sweating. In addition to sunscreen, you can also choose to wear a hat and a thin coat to protect yourself from the sun.
