Why do women have droopy eyelids?

Why do women have droopy eyelids?

Drooping eyelids are a very common phenomenon among many middle-aged and elderly people. As we age, the degree of sagging will become more serious, and may even affect our sight and cause blurred vision, which is really annoying. Many people spend money on corrective surgery to improve their eyes in order to reshape their appearance. So besides natural sagging of the eyelids, what other reasons can cause them to droop? Let me tell you below.

Ptosis can be unilateral or bilateral, and can be divided into congenital and acquired types. Congenital ptosis is caused by incomplete development of the oculomotor nerve nucleus or the levator palpebrae superioris muscle. The former is often accompanied by other extraocular muscle paralysis or epicanthus in addition to ptosis, while the latter is usually simple ptosis. As for the cause of ptosis, if it is caused by the defect of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, it usually manifests as simple ptosis. If it is caused by incomplete development of the nerve nucleus, it is often accompanied by other eye abnormalities, such as epicanthus, small palpebral fissure, strabismus, etc.

Ptosis is caused by the following 4 reasons

1. Myogenic factors: In myasthenia gravis, ptosis may be the only symptom, which can be bilateral or unilateral. Its characteristics are that the symptoms are milder in the morning and worse at night, and may sometimes be accompanied by weakness of other extraocular muscles.

2. Mechanical factors: mainly inflammatory swelling of the upper eyelid, mass growth, excessive fat deposition, etc. which increase the weight of the upper eyelid and make the levator palpebrae superioris muscle unable to fully lift the upper eyelid.

3. Neurogenic factors: seen in oculomotor nerve paralysis caused by various reasons. Mild ptosis may also occur in Horner's syndrome caused by sympathetic nerve paralysis.

4. Congenital causes are generally believed to be related to genetics: mainly due to poor development of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle used to lift the upper eyelid, or incomplete function of the motor nerve that controls the muscle, resulting in the eyes being unable to open wide and the drooping eyelids covering part of the pupil.

The above are the causes of ptosis. Only by understanding the causes of ptosis in detail can we find the best treatment method and achieve ideal treatment results. There are many ways to treat droopy eyelids. In addition to surgery, there are many other treatment methods, so we must maintain a good mood to treat it and not complain about it.
