Water holding capacity Imokawa et al. conducted experiments to study which lipid component plays a dominant role in the restoration of skin moisture. The study found that topical application of ceramides can lead to a very significant increase in skin conductivity; cholesterol is second; while the effects of free fatty acids and cholesterol esters are not obvious. Ceramide has a very strong ability to associate with water molecules. It maintains the moisture of the skin by forming a network structure in the stratum corneum. Therefore, ceramide is a highly effective moisturizer with a moisturizing ability 16 times that of hyaluronic acid. It is especially effective in moisturizing elderly dry skin, with an efficiency of 80%. It is also easily absorbed by the skin and can promote the penetration of other nutrients. 4.
