What are the side effects of microcrystalline porcelain injection?

Microcrystalline porcelain is an injectable substance that is often used in clinical practice for rhinoplasty or chin augmentation. For those who have such needs, they will inevitably be concerned about whether microcrystalline porcelain will leave side effects. In fact, once microcrystalline porcelain is injected, if the effect is not satisfactory, it can only be eliminated or removed through medication. However, there are certain technical difficulties, and it requires very professional skills.

1What is microcrystalline porcelain?

Radiesse is a biological soft ceramic whose main structure and composition is calcium hydroxyapatite, which is the basic mineral component of bones and teeth. Since calcium hydroxyapatite cannot be directly injected into the human body, it must be suspended in a gel-like carrier consisting essentially of water (distilled water for injection USP) and glycerol (USP) to form a semi-solid implant that is easy to inject.

Due to the above composition characteristics, microcrystalline porcelain has good biocompatibility and biodegradability.

2 Scope of application

The texture of microcrystalline porcelain is relatively strong, so its characteristics are strong support and good shaping ability. Since microcrystalline porcelain will gradually harden after being injected into the human body, it is not easy to deform, making the three-dimensional effect created very ideal, suitable for the nose, chin, etc.

3 Disadvantages of Microcrystalline Porcelain

(1) Expensive.

(2) It is not effective for patients with severe microchin deformity and chin retraction.

(3) The filling will start to be absorbed about half a year after the injection, depending on individual physical condition. The effect is not long-lasting and can generally last for 18-24 months.

Because microcrystalline porcelain is a calcium compound, it has a higher chance of causing an immune reaction. This calcium compound will not be absorbed by the human body. No matter where you inject it, it will stay there and may form a scab and fuse with the body at that location. Some people get swollen like eggs after just a little injection, and some people also develop herpes or ulcers due to severe immune reactions after the injection.
