The effect of carnosine on skin

The effect of carnosine on skin

Carnosine has many effects on the skin, but many people may not be very aware of them. Carnosine has the function of protecting cell membranes and anti-aging, so many actors and celebrities use this product and it is also often used in beauty salons. Carnosine also has many functions. It can promote metabolism and excrete metabolic products from the body in a timely manner. Of course, carnosine also has side effects. Let’s take a closer look at the effects of carnosine on the skin.

The main function of carnosine is anti-aging, anti-oxidation and free radicals

Another specialized function of carnosine is to prevent damage by free radicals, especially to protect the lipid components of cell membranes, so carnosine is a stabilizer and protector of cell membranes. Damage to the cell membrane is like a balloon with a hole in it—it's useless. Carnosine can not only protect the cell membrane, but also protect the membrane of the mitochondria inside the cell.

May act as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. It acts as an antioxidant to neutralize and dissolve free radicals that attack our DNA cells. It helps chelate metal ions (flushing toxins out of the body), it boosts the immune system, and has been shown to reduce and prevent cell damage caused by betaamyloid, a substance found in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s. Even more interesting is the claim that it can extend the Hayflick Limit (a cell can only replicate itself about 52 times before “dying”). Carnosine can extend the cell’s ability to replicate more than 60 times (a true anti-aging ingredient).

Side Effects of Carnosine

Carnosine has not been evaluated by the FDA, and many European cosmetic companies, such as Ethos, have been banned from producing products containing the ingredient because it is classified as a "drug."

Aside from the potential risk of muscle cramps with excessive carnosine intake, the ingredient has not been linked to any irreversible side effects to date. Because carnosine occurs naturally in the body and has long been found in foods humans consume, it is generally considered safe. However, it is worth mentioning that the body contains a group of enzymes, the carnosinases, which are specifically designed to break down carnosine. The reason for the presence of these enzymes is unknown, but one possibility is that they are used to help prevent some unknown side effects of carnosine.
