The results of the study showed that the incidence of severe dermatitis was significantly lower among patients who used calendula (compared to those who were treated with triethanolamine). Patients receiving calendula also experienced significantly reduced radiation-related pain.

2) Sunburn

Animal studies suggest that calendula may help protect against skin damage caused by sun exposure. For example, a 2010 study on mice showed that calendula can shield the skin from UV-induced oxidative stress (a damaging process linked to several skin diseases as well as accelerated skin aging).

3) Earache

When combined with other plant extracts, calendula can help soothe pain caused by ear infections. In a 2003 study of 171 children with infection-induced ear pain, researchers found that therapeutic ear drops containing calendula, garlic, mullein, St. John's wort, lavender, vitamin E, and olive oil led to a significant improvement in pain over the course of three days. In fact, those who were given the ear drops alone had a better response than those who were treated with both ear drops and amoxicillin.

Although calendula is generally considered safe, it may cause allergic reactions in some people. The use of calendula should also be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
