Mangosteen


Mangosteen, also known as mangosteen, wind fruit, and inverted mangosteen, belongs to the genus Garcinia of the family Garciniaceae and is known as the "Queen of Fruits" in the tropics. In Southeast Asia, mangosteen peel has been used as a traditional Thai medicine for the treatment of abdominal pain, diarrhea, dysentery, infectious trauma, suppuration, chronic ulcers, gonorrhea, leukemia and sepsis. It also has obvious anti-allergic and anti-asthmatic activities.


Xanthones are the main active substances in mangosteen for its medicinal and health benefits, and are abundant in mangosteen peel and shell. Researchers have identified and isolated about 40 xanthones in mangosteen peel, such as α-mangostin, β-mangostin, γ-mangostin, etc. These xanthones generally possess anticonvulsant, antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antioxidant and diuretic activities and are used to help alleviate gastrointestinal disorders, skin disorders, inflammation, symptoms of infectious diseases and to lower cholesterol levels.


The antioxidant properties of xanthones are also shown in their chemoprevention of cancer. Studies have shown that natural α-mangostin can inhibit the early lesions of the mammary organs of experimental mice after being induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz(α-)anthracene; natural α-mangostin exhibits a strong chemopreventive effect in the bioassay of short-term colon cancer; 6 xanthones isolated from mangosteen peel can inhibit human leukemia cells HL60, among which 10μmol α-mangostinone showed a complete inhibitory effect on HL60 by inducing programmed cell death.

In addition, how should tomatoes be eaten to be more effective in fighting oxidation? That is to eat them cooked. Although the vitamin C contained in cooked or processed tomatoes (tomato sauce, tomato juice, canned tomatoes) will be destroyed, the lycopene content can be increased several times, and the antioxidant function is also stronger.


Grape


The antioxidant capacity of anthocyanin glycosides in grape seeds is 20 times that of vitamin C and 50 times that of vitamin E. The antioxidant capacity of red wine made from grapes is improved due to fermentation. Therefore, drinking some red wine in moderation while eating grapes can achieve the purpose of anti-oxidation.
