Ptosis usually refers to drooping of the upper eyelid, which is manifested by the partial or complete inability to lift the upper eyelid, causing the lower edge of the upper eyelid to cover too much of the upper edge of the cornea, making the palpebral fissure of the affected eye appear smaller than the normal palpebral fissure. Patients often raise their eyebrows, frown their foreheads, and look up to form a special high-looking posture. If this disease occurs at an early age and the pupil is covered for a long time, it is easy to develop disuse amblyopia. Ptosis is an early symptom of many diseases and should be diagnosed as early as possible and treated according to the cause. Congenital ptosis should be corrected surgically.

Hypoplasia of the oculomotor nerve nucleus, or oculomotor nerve paralysis, trachoma, tumor, inflammation and trauma, eyelid hypertrophy, damage to the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, etc.

Causes and common diseases

There are many causes of ptosis, involving neurology, ophthalmology and endocrinology. Ptosis is clinically divided into congenital and acquired. Congenital, eyes are not open from birth, caused by hysterectomy of the levator palpebrae superioris branch of the oculomotor nerve or the oculomotor nerve nucleus, and is hereditary.

Acquired ptosis is caused by oculomotor nerve paralysis, or by trachoma, tumors, inflammation and trauma, eyelid hypertrophy, and damage to the levator palpebrae superioris muscle. Ptosis can affect both eyes or just one eye, covering the pupil and making it difficult to see. Ptosis in children is mainly caused by congenital simple ptosis, mandibular blink syndrome, myasthenia gravis, trauma, etc.

The main causes of ptosis in adults include myasthenia gravis, chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia, hyperthyroid ophthalmomyopathy, and intracranial aneurysm compressive ptosis. The main causes of ptosis in the elderly include degeneration of the senile aponeurosis, myasthenia gravis, ptosis after cerebral infarction, and diabetic oculomotor nerve palsy.
